Johnny Hates Jazz consists of singer-songwriter Clark Datchler (vocals, keyboards) and producer-engineer Mike Nocito (guitar). The pair met in the early 1980s while working at RAK Studios in London. The first song Clark wrote for the band was “Shattered Dreams”, and as predicted by his father Fred, it became a massive hit. After being signed to Virgin Records and releasing the single in 1987, it hit the top 5 throughout Europe and Asia as well as in the UK. This was followed by four other worldwide smashes including “I Don’t Want To Be A Hero”, “Heart Of Gold” and “Turn Back The Clock” (featuring Kim Wilde on backing vocals). Their album of the same name went double platinum and hit the number 1 spot in the UK. JHJ then went on to achieve great success in the US, with “Shattered Dreams” reaching number 2 on the US charts.
After 21 years apart following Clark’s departure from the band at the end of 1988, the pair re-established their friendship and creative synergy in 2009, working on a new album for the modern era ‘Magnetized’ (released in 2013) and performing together once again. The single ‘Magnetized’ became a huge radio hit in both the UK and Germany.
